This year’s London to Brighton Classic, Kit & Sports Car Run saw over 400 vehicles spanning over 100 years take to the road on Sunday 2nd June, starting from the stunning Greenwich Park for maybe the last time.

Stephen Smith, from event organiser GE Motor Events, said: “With the introduction and extension of ULEZ ultra low emission zone, it is doubtful we can use Greenwich Park as our starting point next year so we’re already looking at alternatives.

“Plus, because of how successful the event has become, we’re also considering splitting the Classic Run into two categories – Old Timer and Young Timer – which is already used on events in Europe.

“The 2019 run was a huge success and thanks to all the entrants, marshals and those who supported us once again.”

Sponsored by ClassicLine Insurance, vehicles spanning 100 years of motoring heritage took part in the two events - the Classic Run, now in its 31st year, and the Kit & Sports Car Run, marking 19 years.

The oldest car on the Classic Run was a 1915 Ford Model T Speedster, belonging to Tony Robinson from Peterborough. Competing with his son Majied, the car crossed the finish line despite Tony’s earlier concerns about overheating and the strength of the brakes when going downhill.

Darrell Cunningham was another finisher, having completed the route in his 1961 Standard Vanguard Luxury Six Vignale. This is an incredibly rare example, given its Borg Warner 35 automatic gearbox and is believed to be the only surviving automatic model on the road. Darrell was raising money for the Heart Foundation at Southampton Hospital.

Other entrants included a 1976 Rolls Royce Shadow One, competing for the 30th time with owner Nigel Fisher behind the wheel, a 1967 Jaguar E-Type once owned by Princess Margaret, an ex-Swiss army radio command vehicle, decommissioned in 1992, and a 1965 Fiat 500F converted to electric.

There was also a raft of Mini and Ford owners, competing in the Run to celebrate the historic milestone of their marque.

The London to Brighton Classic Car Run is open to vehicles that were produced pre-1994, while the Kit & Sports Car Run is available to kit, replica, and modern sports cars owners, to allow motoring enthusiasts to get involved and showcase a diverse range of vehicles.

Using tulip style road books, the crews departed Greenwich Park with the classics stopping at Chiddingstone Castle, and the Kit & Sports Cars visiting Penshurst Place, Tonbridge. All the cars finished on Brighton’s iconic Madeira Drive next to the pier.
